Black and White: A Devine Mac OS X Experience

Naughty or Nice?

Let Someone Else Do Your Dirty Work

When you begin a new game, only three of these creatures (the ape, cow, and tiger) are available for you to choose from. The other creatures become available later, when you complete tasks. (You can have only one creature at a time, so, if you choose one that shows up later, you will have to get rid of your current creature.)

Make sure you watch for telltale clues when you train your creature. If he points to his mouth, he’s hungry or thirsty. If he points at something, he’s learning about it. Like a real animal, you’ll want to reward him when he does something good and punish him when he does something bad. Of course, depending on the kind of god you want to be, you’ll have to decide whether the villager he just ate merits a pat on the head or a slap in the face.

To keep your creature under control until he’s well trained, use one of three leashes: the Learning Leash forces him to stay near you and watch you perform a task so that he can mimic it; the Leash of Compassion makes him more inclined to be nice to the villagers; and the Leash of Aggression encourages him to be mean to them.

The Creatures

(Note: The gorilla, horse, leopard, rhino, and mandrill will be available later as downloads from the GraphSim and Feral Interactive web sites.)

Ape: The ape is smarter and reacts quicker to his surroundings than other creatures.

Brown Bear: In level five, there’s a silver scroll that directs you to clean up the bear droppings in a nearby forest and make the local village smell better. As a reward, you can use the brown bear. He’s a strong fighter and will watch over your villagers with fierce loyalty, if you want him to.

Chimp: In level three, there’s a witch who wants a child. Bring her one, and she will give you the chimp. He’s not much of a fighter, but he’s great at non-combat tasks.

Cow: The cow is smarter than most of the other creatures, but it’s not very strong and tends to be lazy. You can give it a workout and get it into better shape, though.

Gorilla: The gorilla is a strong fighter, but he’s not very interested in tending to the villagers. In fact, he’ll eat them when other food supplies run out.

Horse: If you’re a benevolent god, the horse is a good choice for a creature. It doesn’t require much training and will tend to your villagers without much prodding from you.

Leopard: A cunning fighter, the leopard isn’t very smart and won’t do well minding your villages.

Lion: Fierce and strong, the lion is available in level five, at the end of a silver scroll quest in which you must guide a blind lion to its meal. This creature is arguably the best in the game, but it’s the toughest to obtain.

Mandrill: This creature is average in all areas.

Polar Bear: Obtaining this creature is tricky. First you must complete the Explorers quest in level one. When you meet the explorers again in level five, click on the silver scroll to help them again and receive the polar bear. He’s similar to the brown bear in most areas.

Rhino: The rhino is a fearsome beast, but he’s not very smart.

Sheep: In level one, find all the sheep in the Lost Flock silver scroll quest. If you find five, you will receive some food from the shepherd, but you must locate all of them to get the sheep creature. Surprisingly, he’s a strong fighter in addition to his natural tendency to take care of your villagers.

Tiger: This creature is strong but not very bright.

Tortoise: In level four, complete the Fish Puzzle silver scroll quest, during which you must help a boy catch some fish, to receive the tortoise. He’s not very quick, but his shell gives him near invincibility, and he is good for minding your villagers.

Wolf: You’ll receive the wolf if you complete the Treacherous Path silver scroll quest in level four. He fights well and will protect your villagers, but he has a tendency to kick things.

Zebra: To get this creature, try the Riddles silver scroll quest in level two. His abilities are much like the horse’s.
