Stronghold: Building Castles with the Strength of Mac OS X

The Keep

Kingdom Divided By Four

In the military campaign, your goal is to defeat each of the four dukes who control the kingdom and reunite the land.

The Rat: Small and conniving, The Rat (real name: Duke de Puce) came into his station in life because his mother had once worked for the original Duke de Puce, and a messenger told him that the Duke was really his father. The messenger also informed him that the Duke and his entire family had been lost at sea, which left The Rat as his sole heir.

The Snake: True to his name, The Snake (real name: Duke Beauregard) once made a nice life for himself by skimming off the top of the taxes he collected when he was the governor of some outlying provinces. When the king found out, though, he was brought back to the kingdom, where he lost an eye to the main character’s father.

The Pig: Not the prettiest guy to bear the title of duke (real name: Duke Truffe). Legend has it that he was so ugly when he was born, his parents abandoned him and he was taken in by a group of wandering bandits. The Pig eventually became their leader.

The Wolf: A large, imposing man whose past is murky (real name: Duke Volpe). Supposedly both of his parents died of natural causes (or perhaps not?) shortly after his 18th birthday and he took over their holdings.

Tips and Tricks

Need help? Here are a few hints that will assist you in just about any situation.
  • Place hunter posts close to granaries to speed up food production.
  • Build woodcutter huts near trees to speed up wood production.
  • Save wood by making your defensive walls as straight as possible.
  • Use the spacebar to flatten your castle walls and check for gaps in them. This also comes in handy during sieges, when enemies may lurk behind walls and chip away at them.
  • Keep your archers in the gatehouse, where they will have a height advantage when raining arrows down on the enemy.
  • Place the fletcher workshops close to the wood stockpile for greater efficiency.
  • Dairy farms produce more food than hunters, but they take more time to start up and are harder to defend. (If your fiefdom has tanners, they will take a few cows and turn them into leather goods.)
  • During the military campaign, protect the main character at all costs: he isn’t very strong, and if he dies, you lose. Surround him with macemen or mounted knights.
