You Say You Want a Revolution? Play for Power in Republic: the Revolution

Learn the tactics you’ll need to unseat Karasov, and see who’s who in Novistrana.

Tips and Tricks

Repeatedly trying the same action in the same district usually causes that action to lose effectiveness, so wait several days before trying it again. You can left-click on the people in rooftop view to see if they’re getting tired of a certain action.

The final question in the personality test asks you to choose the symbol for your faction. It also has some bearing on the results, so choose wisely.

Your character’s resolve is the only attribute that starts at 100%. Take control of the situation right away to keep it there, and the best way to do that is to recruit a character whose abilities will fill your early needs.

Proles — the average Novistranians whose attitudes you must sway in your favor — need to have neutral opinions in the districts you canvas for support if you want to win those areas over. If no Proles have neutral attitudes in an area you want to target, don’t bother with it. To turn their opinions neutral, attack an enemy stronghold in their area.

Pay attention when characters in your faction start having second thoughts about their goals. When you strengthen their resolve attributes, their other abilities are temporarily boosted as well, making them more efficient as they carry out their assignments.

Misinformation is important. Use it to divert attention away from what one of your characters is doing, or if your actions leave behind the taint of sleaze. And if your enemies’ actions leave some sleaze behind, capitalize on it by trying to drum up support in that area.

You should also consider employing misinformation if you notice that many of your supposedly secret actions are appearing in the newspapers, which you can check in the diary screen.

Make sure your characters are doing something productive during each day of game time. Remember, 12 real-time minutes pass for each day of game time, with 4 minutes devoted to each morning, afternoon, and night segment.

The amount of information you have about a particular district decreases over time, causing you to lose track of your enemies. The rate of information decay hastens if your faction’s ideology is different from the district’s ideology.

Move a character to another district if your enemies are having an affect on him through their actions. Just make sure the new district is one where you enjoy a lot of support or your enemies have little information.

If your knowledge level in a district is zero, you won’t be able to see the support levels there, so make sure you know a little something about each district in the game.

Keep in mind the fact that you will lose a fifth of the cost of an action if you cancel it, so plan carefully so that you don’t waste your resources.

While viewing the faction screen, note that the leader of each faction is placed in the center of the star with his characters on the points surrounding it. The further away a character is from his leader, the poorer his relationship is with him. You can use this to look for disgruntled characters you’d like to recruit for your faction as well as make sure that everyone in your group is happy. The strengthen character action helps you keep unhappy characters in your faction.

While using the gather knowledge action in a certain district, you can click on a building or fact on the screen to dig deeper into it and learn more. Remember, the more knowledge you gather about a district, the more secret places you will find where you can recruit members and carry out other activities without being exposed by your rivals.

Ideologies in the game relate as follows: force beats influence, wealth beats force, and influence beats wealth. Additionally, your faction’s ideology will change if your actions are different from the ideology you start the game with, which was decided by the 10-question personality test. For example, if you start out with an influence ideology but you continue to use forceful actions, your ideology will become force. The change could cause some members of your faction to leave if they’re opposed to the new ideology. Of course, it could also attract members of other factions, if they’re in tune with it and you try to recruit them.

Novistrana’s Movers and Shakers

So you want to know who the key people are in Novistrana? We’ll fill you in on the details, but don’t divulge them to anyone or you may receive an unwelcome visit from Karasov’s agents.

Ivan Alexashenko: This veteran of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan is a powerful man with a large military force behind him. He uses their loyalty to run mercenary activities as well as provide protection for his criminal activities, which range from selling stuff on the black market to protection rackets. Alexashenko is the only man in the country whose military rivals Karasov’s.

Dr. Josef Kislov: A religious conservative, Kislov is very outspoken in his belief that Karasov and his cronies are criminals who are ruining his beloved country. He also views the church as part of the problem and now works on his own, drawing in disaffected people who want to see change in Novistrana.

Arkady Ilyushin: Watch your step around this guy, who’s the godfather of the Novistranan branch of the Russian Mafia. He’s known for ordering ruthless gangland hits on his enemies as he strives to restore his faction to its former position of power.

Alexei Konstantino: One could view him as the Donald Trump of Novistrana, a comparison that would be apt if Trump had enemies who were literally gunning for him. Konstantino made his fortune by competing for lucrative government contracts to renovate old buildings, but he made a few enemies, namely old school Communists who felt he was infringing on their territory and Russian Mafiosos who didn’t like his methods. After several attempts on his life, he used his considerable wealth to hide behind a platoon of bodyguards in high-security offices. His long-term plans include creating a space program and becoming the first Novistranan in orbit.
Dmitri Barkan: When he was seen on TV participating in a violent anti-capitalist demonstration, Barkan was expelled from the Pugachev University of Technology and took his cause underground. He’s popular among young radicals who flock to his illegal rave parties and who are responsible for the violence that often erupts at his rallies. His faction has strong support in academia because many Novistranan leftists increasingly see his way as the only avenue to a free country.

Robert Tarasov: This Ekaterine town council member possesses a charismatic personality and leads a team that spreads his pro-democracy views through leaflets, posters, and radio and TV broadcasts. He wants Karasov to undergo a fair election for office, but many believe the secret police will cause Tarasov to disappear for good before that happens.

Viktor Kovak: Armed with a penchant for brutality and working with corrupt police officers, Kovak heads the Union of Socialist Workers, which is just a front for his criminal activity. He uses the organization’s funds to launder money and preys on well-meaning supporters who don’t realize that many of the unmarked graves in Ekaterine are the result of his work.

Roman Leonov: Another thug, Leonov works out of his strip club, The Roman Bar, which acts as a front for a prostitution ring. Like many in his position, he orders hits but never carries them out, which keeps him from direct involvement in the crimes.

Mikhail Korelev: His business, The Casino, is considered Ekaterine’s most important asset. He’s always looking for investors to help him expand.
