Black and White: Creature Isle
May the Best Monster Win

By Brad Cook

When you complete the unique real-time strategy/role-playing game Black & White, you become an all-powerful, omnipotent god with legions of worshippers and a powerful creature at your side. So what does one get the god who has everything?

How about a copy of Creature Isle? This expansion pack is now available for Mac OS X from Feral Interactive. You can purchase it as part of the Black & White Platinum Edition or separately, if you own the original game already. Creature Isle allows you to take your creature from Black & White and put it through a series of trials hosted by the beasts who are members of the island’s Brotherhood.

You Better Pass With Flying Colors
There’s a secret behind these trials, however: they were devised by a mysterious creature called Eve, who longs for the ideal mate. If your creature can pass her gauntlet of tests, he will win her affection. Not all of her tests are physical, though: some require your creature to exhibit such skills as gardening or playing a good game of hide-and-seek. And the most important test involves how your creature raises Tyke, a little beast that he discovers early in the game. Eve values parental skills, so if you’ve raised your creature correctly, he will treat Tyke well and score points with his bride-to-be.

Like your creature did with you, Tyke learns from his master’s actions and will want to follow him everywhere. If he gets in the way during any of the trials, you can click on the Creature Minder’s hut and have the woman who lives there watch him, but don’t rely on her too often or Eve will disapprove of your creature’s parenting ability.

New People and New Creatures
While there aren’t as many little people to interact with in this expansion pack as there are in Black & White, you’ll run across a few of them while guiding your creature through Eve’s trials. For example, while tending to Arkle’s crops during his test, pay attention to the guard named Romeo and his desire to be alone with a local girl named Juliet, whose father isn’t happy about the relationship. You can meddle with the characters involved in this Shakespearean drama and see how it plays out, if you wish.

In addition to the 15 creatures available in the original game, Creature Isle offers three new ones: the chicken, crocodile, and rhino. As you unlock each of them, you can switch your creature’s body type to one of the new ones if you think it will give you a better advantage during a trial.

So are you ready to help your creature earn Eve’s eternal adoration? You can get started by visiting the online Apple Store, an Apple retail store, or a certified Apple reseller location near you to find a copy of Black & White Platinum Edition.

Hatching Tyke
When you meet Shadrin, the tribal town elder, he tells you about the egg in the sacred Bao tree by the coast.

This egg is extremely important. It contains Tyke, your creature’s apprentice. The easiest way to retrieve him is to press the “L” key to put the Leash of Learning on. Get your creature to pick up a nearby rock by right-clicking on it with the Leash still attached. Then move the creature so he has an unobstructed line-of-sight to the egg and change to the Leash of Aggression by pressing the “V” or “B” keys to cycle through the Leashes.

Don’t let the creature touch any of the clicked waypoints you leave on the ground while moving around, or he will put the rock down. With the Leash of Aggression attached, right-click on the egg to make your creature throw the rock at it and dislodge it. When the egg is on the ground, change to either the Leash of Learning or the Leash of Compassion and right-click on the egg to get your creature to pick it up.

Once you have the egg, you need to find somewhere warm to incubate it. Notice the region of volcanic rock pools. Zoom and click on the topmost volcanic pool to place the egg there.

Now wait for the egg to incubate. After it’s ready, Tyke hatches and the fun really starts.
